Malaysia’s Hilarious Censorship Of Attack on Titan: They Added Clothes To The Titans

Attack Titan wearing clothes

Attack on Titan is one of the most intense and popular anime series ever made. Its story of humans fighting giant naked monsters called Titans is dark, bloody, and full of drama. But when the show aired in Malaysia, something weird happened - the Titans suddenly weren’t so naked anymore. Yep, the censors added clothes to them!

This bizarre editing decision turned the terrifying Titans into a laughing stock. Imagine the Colossal Titan, a giant skinless monster, suddenly wearing shorts? Malaysia’s censorship board, known for strict rules on modesty, decided the Titans’ nudity was too much for viewers. The result? A hilarious and confusing mix of horror and humor that left fans scratching their heads.

Why Malaysia Decided To Dress Up The Titans

Reason behind Malaysia's Attack on Titan censorship

Malaysia has strict censorship laws for TV and movies, especially around violence, language, and nudity. The Titans in Attack on Titan are shown without clothes because they’re not human, they’re fleshy, mindless monsters. However Malaysian censors argued that their naked bodies violated their modesty standards, even though the Titans have no private parts. To make the show appropriate, they digitally added shorts, skirts, or even blurry pixels to cover the Titans’ bodies.

This wasn’t just about the Titans, though. Other scenes were edited too. For example, bloody violence was toned down, and character outfits like Mikasa’s scarf were adjusted to cover more skin. The censorship was done by Malaysia’s national broadcaster, RTM, which has a history of editing shows like SpongeBob SquarePants to remove offensive content. But Attack on Titan’s edits were next-level ridiculous.

How Fans Reacted To Malaysia's Attack on Titan Censorship?

Titans in clothes

When clips of the censored Titans hit social media, fans couldn’t stop laughing. Memes exploded online, with people joking that the Titans were now “ready for a beach party” or “dressed for a job interview.” The Colossal Titan became a meme icon when fans photoshopped him into swim trunks or even a tuxedo. The edits were so poorly done that they looked like a bad Photoshop project. Talk about ruining such a beautifully animated show.

But not everyone found it funny. Some fans felt the censorship ruined the show’s dark tone. The Titans are supposed to be scary, not silly. Others pointed out the irony: Malaysia allowed the show’s extreme violence, like people being eaten alive, but drew the line at imaginary monster butts? The debate sparked discussions about how different countries handle censorship, and why some choices make zero sense.
