In Death Note, Ryuk is the Shinigami (god of death) who drops the deadly notebook into the human world. At first, he doesn’t seem evil; just bored and curious. But if you think about it more deeply, Ryuk might actually be the real villain of Death Note.
The story kicks off with one small action: Ryuk drops the Death Note into the human world for fun. He says he was just bored and wanted to see what would happen. But that one decision caused chaos, mass murders, and global fear. All of it started because of Ryuk’s carelessness.
Check out our YouTube Short to see why Ryuk was the actual villain in Death Note.
Ryuk Gave The Death Note To A Narcissist

When Ryuk gave the notebook to Light Yagami, he didn’t give any warning. He didn’t explain how dangerous it was or what it could lead to. He knew exactly what the Death Note could do; he’s a Shinigami, after all. But he gave it to a high school student anyway, just to see what would happen.
At first, Light used it to kill criminals. But very quickly, he turned into Kira, a killer who thought he was a god. Ryuk watched it all like it was a TV show. He saw innocent people die, he saw detectives like L lose their lives, and he even saw another Shinigami, Rem, sacrifice herself. And through all of this, Ryuk never once tried to stop it. He just watched with a smirk.
He Sparked A Tragedy And Walked Away

Ryuk didn’t pull the trigger, but he loaded the gun. Everything that happened, from Light’s fall into madness to the deaths of innocent people, all started with Ryuk’s actions. And when it was all over, Ryuk didn’t regret anything. He just wrote Light’s name in the notebook and left like it was all a game.
He may not have directly killed anyone, but he gave someone the power to kill and knew exactly how it would all play out. That makes him worse than just a villain; he’s the one who made the villain possible. So Ryuk was the mastermind all along.
