Real-Life Inspiration For Titans In Attack on Titan

One big influence was Muv-Luv Alternative, a game where humans fight for survival against terrifying enemies. That same dark theme shows up in Attack on Titan, where the fear of being wiped out is always present.

Even the way Titans look was carefully thought out. Isayama used real-life wrestlers and martial artists to design their muscular bodies.
