From the moment L shows up, his behavior is strange. He talks in a low voice, doesn’t show his face at first, and always sits in a very weird way — with his knees pulled to his chest like he’s crouching on a chair. It’s not something you see every day, especially from a genius detective who’s solving world-level crimes.
At first, it feels like just a fun character quirk, something that makes L different and unique. But if you look deeper, there’s actually a real reason why L sits like that. He doesn't do it to look cool — in fact, his sitting position connects to his mindset, his health, and the way he works. L’s crouched posture matters more than we might think.

It's A Way To Boost His Brain Power

L once said in the anime that sitting in that crouched position helps him think better. He believes that his brain works 40% better when he sits like that. That might sound silly, but it actually has some logic behind it. Sitting like that improves blood flow and helps him stay alert. It also keeps him from feeling too comfortable, which helps him focus more.
He’s constantly working on dangerous and complex cases, and he can't afford to relax. His crouched position is part of how he gets into “thinking mode.” He stays sharp, focused, and ready to spot even the tiniest details. It's just another example of how L is completely devoted to solving the case, so much so that even the way he sits has a purpose.
It Reflects His Childlike But Intense Personality

L acts like a grown-up genius, but there’s something very childlike about him too. He eats tons of sweets, doesn’t follow normal social rules, and avoids shoes. His crouched position shows that side of him; it’s how a child might sit while thinking or playing. But in L’s case, it’s mixed with his serious and intense personality.
This sitting posture also creates a feeling of unease around him. He doesn’t sit like other people, he doesn’t talk like them either. It makes everyone; even Light; feel like they can never fully understand him. And that’s exactly what L wants. He keeps people off-balance so they can’t read his next move, and especially moves for his battle of wits with Light.
