From the very beginning of Demon Slayer, it’s clear that Tanjiro Kamado is no ordinary swordsman. He trains hard, fights Demons with heart, and has a strong sense of justice. Many fans thought he was on the path to becoming a Hashira - the highest rank in the Demon Slayer Corps. But surprisingly, Tanjiro never gets that title, even though he does things most Hashira couldn’t dream of.
This might leave many wondering why Tanjiro, despite being so strong and heroic, never became a Hashira. The answer isn't because he’s weak - far from it. The truth lies in the journey he takes, the values he holds, and the way the story unfolds.
Don’t forget to watch our YouTube Short to see why Tanjiro never became a Hashira in Demon Slayer.
Becoming A Hashira Isn’t That Simple

To become a Hashira, Demon Sayers must meet strict conditions. They need to kill at least 50 demons or defeat a member of the Twelve Kizuki. Tanjiro does fight some of the strongest Demons in the series, like Rui, Gyutaro, and even Muzan himself. But he doesn’t do it alone. Most of his battles are team efforts, where victory is shared.
For instance, during the fight against Gyutaro and Daki, Tanjiro works alongside Tengen Uzui, Zenitsu, and Inosuke. This teamwork shows how strong they are together, but it doesn’t match the Corps’ usual standards for individual promotion to Hashira. His growth is fast, but official promotions usually take more time and solo success.
Tanjiro Never Chased The Title

Here's one big reason why Tanjiro never became a Hashira - well, he never wanted to. His only goal from the start was to turn Nezuko back into a human and defeat Muzan. He never cared about ranks or titles. All he wanted was to protect his sister and stop others from facing the same pain he did.
Even though he’s loyal to the Corps, Tanjiro often follows his heart more than strict orders. He believes in showing kindness, even to Demons, like when he showed sympathy to Rui after defeating him. This attitude sometimes clashed with the mindset of the current Hashira, who were trained to kill Demons without hesitation.
Timing Wasn’t On His Side

Tanjiro gained a lot of power in a short amount of time, and even the Hashira noticed it. Giyu and Rengoku especially saw his potential. But before any promotion could happen, everything moved too fast. The final battle against Muzan came sooner than expected, and the Corps didn’t have time to appoint new Hashira.
During that war, many existing Hashira died or retired, and the structure of the Corps was falling apart. After Muzan’s defeat, the Demon threat was gone. There was no longer a need for Hashira, and the Demon Slayer Corps was disbanded. Tanjiro never got the chance to be promoted, even though he earned the respect of everyone.
Final Verdict: Tanjiro Never Became A Hashira, But Remained A Hero Without A Title

Tanjiro never became a Hashira, but that doesn’t take away from his greatness. He showed strength, heart, and courage in ways that went beyond what a Hashira usually represents. He may not have had the title, but he had the spirit, and that mattered more.
Tanjiro's mission in Demon Slayer was never about ranks or recognition. It was about bringing her sister back, saving humanity from the Demon curse, and doing what was right. That’s what makes him one of the most unforgettable heroes in anime.
