Jujutsu Kaisen: What Are Cursed Wombs Death Paintings?

Jujutsu Kaisen what are Cursed Wombs explained

Jujutsu Kaisen is filled with many strange and powerful beings, but few are as mysterious and tragic as the Cursed Wombs, especially the group called the Death Paintings. These are not your usual Curses or Spirits — they carry a deep history of pain, family, and what it means to truly “belong.”

When we talk about Cursed Wombs, we’re really talking about a mix between humans and Curses. Among these, the Death Paintings are the scariest. They’re a group of nine special individuals born from horrible experiments gone wrong. Understanding who they are helps explain some of the most moving moments and biggest surprises in Jujutsu Kaisen.

Origins & Concept: Where Death Paintings Come From

A Cursed Womb falling from the sky

The Death Paintings are very different from normal Cursed Objects. They are hybrid beings, half human, half curse — created in a terrifying way. Noritoshi Kamo, a shaman known as the most evil in the series’ history, forced a woman who could have half-Cursed children to give birth nine different times. Each time, the pregnancy ended early and produced one of the Death Paintings, making a total of nine. These weren’t ordinary children, but objects sealed away because of their dangerous powers.

The idea for the Death Paintings actually comes from real-life Buddhist art called Kusōzu. This artwork shows nine stages of a body decomposing after death. Fittingly, each Death Painting is named after one of these stages. Not only does this detail add a creepy feeling to their story, but it also shows horror, tragedy, and Japanese culture.

What Makes A Cursed Womb Different

The 3 Death Paintings, Choso, Eso and Kechizu

Death Paintings are created from the mixed blood of three sources: a human woman, a powerful Cursed Spirit, and Noritoshi Kamo himself. Because of this, they have powers much stronger than most Curses and are much harder to destroy. For many years, all nine Death Paintings were locked away and hidden at Tokyo Jujutsu High to keep people safe.

Among the nine, three Death Paintings became especially important: Choso, Eso, and Kechizu. When these Cursed Objects were put into human bodies, they came alive as semi-human beings. Unlike normal Curses, they can feel emotions, remember their lives, and even care for each other like family. They are different from other Curses because they aren’t just creatures of hate or revenge — they are complex beings, sometimes feeling lost and alone.

Death Paintings In The Story

The Death Paintings became a big part of the story during the Death Painting arc and the famous Shibuya Incident. The main villain, Suguru Geto (Kenjaku), released Choso, Eso, and Kechizu, hoping to use their power for his evil plans. Quickly, they saw each other as brothers and started fighting together against the heroes.

Yuji and Nobara faced Eso and Kechizu in a tough battle, finally defeating and exorcising them. But Choso’s journey didn’t end there. Through a twist of fate, he believed Yuji was his younger brother during the Shibuya Incident. This changed everything — Choso’s fight became about protecting someone he thought was family. This relationship showed that Curses could have feelings as deep as humans do.

Yuji And Choso's Connection Explained

Choso has a vision of the his real family

The connection between Yuji and the Death Paintings goes even deeper. Noritoshi Kamo, who helped create the Death Paintings, was later shown to be possessed by Kenjaku, an important villain. Kenjaku also took over Yuji’s mother, which means Yuji and the Death Paintings are actually part of the same strange family. That’s why Choso and Yuji share a strange bond.

The Death Paintings are some of the most heartbreaking characters in Jujutsu Kaisen. Their story comes from deep sadness and pain, experiments gone wrong, and a longing for real family and belonging. In the end, the Death Paintings show us that in the world of Jujutsu Kaisen, even curses can have hearts, hopes, and the power to change.
