Why Does Tanjiro’s Sword Always Break In Demon Slayer?

Why Does Tanjiro's Sword always break

If you’ve watched Demon Slayer, you’ve probably noticed one thing about Tanjiro: his sword just doesn’t last. Almost every time he goes into battle, the poor Nichirin blade ends up broken, chipped, or completely snapped in half. While it makes for some dramatic moments, fans often wonder, why does this keep happening?

Is it just for the plot, or is there an actual reason behind it? Tanjiro’s sword breaking all the time actually tells us a lot about his character, his fighting style, and even the kind of enemies he’s going up against.

Tanjiro Fights Brutally Strong Demons

Tanjiro almost beheads Gyutaro

Tanjiro doesn’t fight small-time Demons. From his first real mission, he’s been thrown into crazy hard battles. Whether it’s Rui from the Spider Family, Daki and Gyutaro, or even Akaza and Hantengu, Tanjiro is always facing powerful Upper or Lower Moon Demons. These Demons are insanely tough and can regenerate almost instantly, which means Tanjiro has to go all out every single time.

Because of that, his sword takes a beating. Unlike some other Demon Slayers who might hold back or play it safe, Tanjiro often pushes himself past his limits. His Nichirin sword clashes with enemies that have bodies tougher than steel, so, no wonder it keeps breaking.

His Emotions Fuel His Fighting Style

Tanjiro is very emotional

Tanjiro is super emotional when he fights. He’s driven by his love for Nezuko, his pain over his family, and his desire to save others. That emotional intensity shows up in his moves. He puts his entire soul into every swing of his sword, which makes his attacks strong enough to push his sword to its limits.

Instead of stepping back and thinking tactically, he charges in with everything he’s got. That heroic attitude is why we love him, but it’s also why his sword suffers. His blade ends up breaking not just from enemy attacks, but from his own intensity.

Nichirin Swords Are Strong, But Not Unbreakable

Nichirin swords are special; they’re made from a unique ore that absorbs sunlight, which is deadly to Demons. But just because they’re Demon-killing weapons doesn’t mean they’re unbreakable. These swords still follow basic physics. If you strike something too hard or take too much damage, even the strongest metal can snap.

Also, each sword is tailored to the user. Since Tanjiro’s sword turns black (a rare color), it’s not clearly understood what kind of qualities it holds. Some fans even speculate that black Nichirin swords might be more unstable or mysterious in nature, which could also explain why they keep breaking.

A funny yet important part of this whole situation is how mad the swordsmiths get every time Tanjiro breaks a sword. Especially Hotaru Haganezuka; he’s always chasing Tanjiro around for damaging his work. These moments are played for laughs, but they show just how rare it is for someone to break so many swords. It’s not normal.

Final Verdict: Tanjiro Is Brave, And His Broken Sword Proves It

So, why does Tanjiro’s sword always break? It’s not because he’s careless. It’s because he’s brave. He fights enemies way above his level, uses every ounce of his strength, and never holds back. His sword breaking is a sign of how far he’s willing to go to protect others, even if it means destroying the very weapon that protects him.

It also makes us admire him more. Every time that sword breaks, we know Tanjiro didn’t back down. He stood his ground, fought with heart, and gave it his all. And that’s what makes him such a powerful and lovable main character.
